The First Therapy Session Online
When providing consultations with potential clients one of the questions I’m asked is “What can I expect in my first session?” A totally fair question to ask because seeking therapy can be so vulnerable. I love to make sure people feel comfortable and secure, knowing what to expect is the just the first step in the process.
First: A Consultation
Many people take advantage of a free consultation call to determine if we are the right therapist/client match. These are just 15–20-minute phone calls where we get to know one another. Here I ask questions such as what you are looking for not only in therapy, but in a therapist, why it feels like the right time, and what has been working well for you so far. This is a great time to ask questions too! Take this time to get a feel for how an hour-long chat with me might be and a vibe check. We then go over any fees, insurance and availability.
Next: Logistical Stuff
I like to offer the chance to book during out consult or allow space to think about it. Should you decide to move forward (I hope you do). You will receive a link via email to create an online portal with Sessions Health. Here you will fill out demographics, sign paperwork such as practice policies, answer a few questionnaires, upload any insurance and payment information, and complete an intake. This is a space that asks additional questions about history and what you are seeking in therapy. Feel free to take your time filling it out, it helps ease some of the first session jitters just to get it out.
Then: Your Session
You will receive email and text reminders prior to your session. On the day of you will get a link to connect via Sessions. Find a comfortable and quiet spot, where you feel safe being able to chat. If you’re feeling a bit nervous, chances are I am too! Once we connect, we will spend some time reviewing some of the points in your consultation call and the intake paperwork. I will ask any clarifying question and really explore how I can best help. We will go over the symptoms you’ve been experiencing in relation to your mental health. This could be headaches, irritability, trouble sleeping, panic attacks etc. Then we create a few goals for treatment. For example, Improving use of healthy coping strategies. We will spend some time getting to know one another and building rapport. I always invite the chance to ask any questions you may have about me. I’m a pretty open book!
Last
The last step is simply scheduling our next session! We typically do this during session, or you can request an appointment in your client portal. If anything comes up between sessions, you are always welcome to email, call or text.
