Therapy for Your Inner Critic, People-Pleasing & Self-Esteem

Online sessions from anywhere in Ohio. Daytime appointments on Mondays & Fridays.

Does this sound familiar?

You're the one everyone leans on. You show up, follow through, and make sure everyone else is okay. But there's a voice in your head that never lets up, and it's rarely kind.

Maybe you:

  • Say yes when you really want to say no, then feel resentful or drained

  • Replay what you said and wonder if someone's upset with you

  • Feel you have to justify or explain every choice you make

  • Brush off compliments but hold on to every criticism

  • Feel guilty resting, asking for help, or putting yourself first

  • Compare yourself to everyone and always come up short

  • Your brain tells you "You're not doing enough" no matter how much you do

If this feels a little too familiar, you're not alone. Many of the kindest, most capable people are the hardest on themselves.

How therapy can help

That inner critic usually started out trying to protect you, maybe by keeping you liked, safe, or one step ahead of disappointment. Somewhere along the way it stopped being helpful and started to diminish your self-worth.

Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we'll:

  • Get to know your inner critic. Notice when it shows up, what it says, and where it learned to talk that way.

  • Challenge the story. Test those harsh thoughts against the facts and practice a fairer, more realistic voice.

  • Practice boundaries. Learn to say no (and mean it) without the guilt spiral.

  • Rebuild self-trust. Identify your strengths and remember you have a voice worth trusting.

  • Take small, brave steps. Try the things your inner critic has been talking you out of.

I also draw on DBT skills and Motivational Interviewing when they fit. Therapy with me is collaborative and down to earth.

Common questions

Is people-pleasing really something therapy can help with?
Yes. People-pleasing is a pattern of thoughts and habits, and patterns can change. We'll work on what drives it and practice new responses in real life.

Will working on this make me selfish?
No. Setting boundaries and caring for yourself is how you keep showing up for the people you love without burning out.

How is this different from anxiety therapy?
They overlap a lot. Anxiety therapy focuses on worry and overthinking. This work focuses on how you see and talk to yourself. Many people work on both.

What happens in the first session?
We'll talk about what's bringing you in, what you'd like to change, and how we'll work toward it.

You deserve a kinder voice in your corner.
